June Scripture Writing Plan: Who I am in Christ

Happy almost June friends!

The new topical plan for this month is over the topic of Who I am in Christ. 

If you ever struggle with who you are, (and if you are enough)

 this list of Biblical truths will reveal exactly who God made you to be.

You need to truly know who you are in Christ so that you can live your life as God intended.

God's opinion is the ONLY one that matters. 

My prayer is that every verse will be a reminder of your true position in 

Christ because of victory won at the Cross.

I made the plan 31 days and plan to do that with

 all topical plans in the future so that they can be done any month-
not just the month I write them for.

Scripture Bags

A few months ago I went to a fundraiser for our local maternity home. I drove home that night thinking that I wanted to start doing something for the sweet mamas staying at the home each month. I decided that surrounding them with scripture to remind them of God’s great love for them would be my goal and that each month I’d give them a bag full of scripture. As I finished the bags for this month and prayed for these sweet mamas this morning, I thought I’d share what I put in each bag in case you have someone that needs to be reminded how loved they are. It only takes a few minutes and can cost almost nothing!

In the Absence of Truth, Lies Reign

Satan is a big, fat, stinky liar. He’s an evil impostor, a deceiver, a creep who lies to us in tons of sneaky ways to get us to believe his lies. To get us to sin. To convince us that the way of the world is better than the way of our Savior. To get us to believe that we deserve the things we want and the pleasures of this world. To cause us to feel that we are worthless and irredeemable and awful. And every single lie he convinces us to believe sets us up for failure. He does this is so many ways- and one that is terrifying to me is when he whispers to me.

My mama was a super sweet lady. I know it’s hard to believe but as a child I occasionally sometimes often misbehaved. And if my misbehavior happened somewhere away from home, my mama would never yell. Nope. What she would do was way, way scarier than yelling. I actually think I would have preferred yelling. What she would do was she would lean down and whisper quietly in my ear. And that whisper? Was terrifying and almost always caused me to do exactly what she said, immediately. Sometimes whispers are way scarier (and more effective) than loud voices. Especially when they are from upset mamas and from evil, stinky Satan.

John 10:10 says…

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. NIV

Here are just a few of the MANY, MANY lies that Satan often tries to get me to believe:
1. I am alone. (lie)
2.I need to be perfect. (lie)
3.God is not good because if He was He would____________. (lie)
4.If _____ will happen, I’ll be happy. (lie)

It’s tempting for me to believe the lies of Satan because he’s crafty. The second I believe and start acting on those lies there are consequences and so I must constantly combat those lies with the TRUTH. The truth found only in God’s word.

When I start to hear Satan whispering in my ear, here are some of the truths I focus on to drown out his lies: :
1. Christ is with me always. I am never alone. Hebrews 13:5
2. God does not expect perfection from me, He expects obedience. John 14:23
3. God is good. Psalm 100:5 and Romans 8:28
4. I can be happy now and forever because Jesus has redeemed me. Isaiah 48:17

Sweet friends, we MUST replace Satan's lies with TRUTH. Every single thought. Every single emotion. Every single lie. We must take them captive to obey Christ. Because when we do, guess what? They die. In the absence of truth, lies reign. And when truth reigns, those lies die.


My prayer for us today is that when we are tempted to believe lies from Satan that we are immediately reminded of who we belong to- Christ. That when we start to hear Satan whispering in our ears, Jesus speaks words of truth over our hearts. That our first instinct when we hear those whispers would to be to run to God's word for reminders of who we are and who He is- loyal, trustworthy, our Abba father who loves us so and came to give us eternal life.

June Scripture Writing Plan 2021: Friendship

 Happy almost June sweet friends!

The plan this month is over something that I think is one of God's greatest gifts:

Friendship

When I speak to women’s groups I always talk about my sweet friends (because they are AMAZING and PRECIOUS and such a huge part of my life and my story). I am blessed to have friends that continually remind me of God’s promises and plans and truth and point me to Him- always. They show up in good times and bad and make me laugh so hard I almost pee in my pants! Every time I speak about my friends, I hear the following statements when I finish speaking from those in the audience:

• Gosh, you have such exceptional friends!
• You sure are lucky to have friends like that.
• I wish I had friends like you and like your friends.

 
And what I always respond with is that I believe the best way to have amazing friends is to read what God says about friendship and loving others, and then DO IT! I tell them to practice being the friend they long to have in order to grow precious friendships. To show up for their friends- in good times and especially in bad times. I always remind them that the most important thing is that God must be at the center of those friendships because no matter how fabulous and wonderful a friend is, a friendship is between two imperfect people who will fail and mess up and let each other down at some point. Friends who remind us of what God says in His word and points us to Him are truly the biggest gift. 

 
God designed us for friendship, but friendships can often be difficult to navigate, and they definitely take work and love and care. I believe community is essential and Christ-centered friendships are truly key for us to live out the purposes God has for us. Friendships are a large part of how God wired us and what brings us joy because He uses our friendships to accomplish mighty works in and through us and because he designed us to support, love and encourage each other.

Think about friendship as a beautiful flower. If you buy a new pot of roses and bring it home, give it the right amount of water & sunshine, prune it and take care of it, it will grow beautiful and produce tons of beautiful blooms and bring you great joy. But, if you buy a new pot of roses and bring it home and set it in a dark closet, never watering or giving it sunshine, it will no doubt wither and die. You can’t expect beautiful blooms from something you don’t care for, nurture and love- it’s just not possible- and it is the same for friendships.

I pray that this month as we read and write verses on friendship, we are reminded that our friendships should bring honor and glory to the Lord and that we should always point each other to the truth and salvation only found in Jesus. I pray that we are reminded to hold friendships loosely and let the Lord direct them. I pray that we are reminded that friendships in the end are not about us but about glorifying God and displaying the love of Christ to those around us. I pray that this month we would thank God for our friends, praying for each of them by name and asking Jesus to accomplish His perfect will through these relationships and that through them Jesus Christ would be glorified and His kingdom advanced.

My word of the year 2019: Yield

I spend lots of time leading up to the new year thinking about and praying about my word and verse for the new year. I'm not one to make resolutions (although I do make lists of goals!) but love choosing a word to study, focus on, and embrace.

This year my word is YIELD and my verse is John 15:5. I want a heart that lives out this verse whole-heartedly.....”I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

YIELD. I love this word because it’s a word that means both give and return. I want to surrender and receive. I want a heart yielded to His desires and His plans (NOT my own because His are far greater than any I could ever dream or imagine) so that my life and testimony yields and shows His incredible faithfulness and love to everyone God places in my life.

So what does living yielded mean? In order for me to live yielded I believe I must fully surrender and completely submit to the Lord (everything- my plans and dreams and hopes) so that I can yield (bear, produce, display) fruit according to His will for my life. And to be totally honest that’s a little scary for me because I am a girl who likes for things to go according to plan- always. (Whose plan? MINE of course!). But this year I strive to have a yielded heart.

-A heart willing to say “YES Lord” to God’s plans, no matter the cost
-A heart that embraces the fact that I am not the one in control and to rest in the fact that He has an eternal perspective while I have an earthly one
-A heart willing to do whatever He says and be obedient, no matter how crazy or impossible it seems
-A heart yielded to His plans above my own reason or what others think or say
-A heart that is yielded to God’s changes in my life instead of scared of them (kick fear to the curb)
-A heart that is yielded to Him alone for approval and doesn’t focus on what others think
-A heart that is yielded to God’s care and love for those in my life instead of clutching them tightly and spending time fearing losing them
-A heart that is yielded to Him and the fact that He is good, even when circumstances clearly are NOT

I so desire a WILLING, yielded heart! I long to know the fullness of life in Christ, the fullness of His joy, and the fullness of His power and in order to do so I must surrender fully unto Him. I must yield.

September Scripture Writing Plan: Holiness of God

 Happy almost September sweet friends!

The plan this month is one I so enjoyed working on, 

Holiness of God

1 Peter 1:15-16 says: 

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 

 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

 This command (not suggestion!) in 1 Peter is simple. We aren't commanded to be all knowing or all powerful like God is, but to be holy like God is holy. 

Isaiah 6:3 says: 

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

Did you notice that Isaiah didn't just say holy one time, but three? It's the only attribute that is repeated in this way which tells us it is important. It wasn't enough to say God was holy, he had to repeat it three times for emphasis. It's like what I do if I am explaining to my husband that "I saw a huge, huge, huge spider!" to get him to understand how big it truly was. In the same way, "holy, holy, holy" is meant to stretch the boundaries of our imaginations. Whatever we think of when we hear that God is holy, He is more holy. He is an entirely different category of holiness and is much holier than we could ever imagine. 

So what does it mean that God is holy? I love this quote by AA Hodge about holiness: 

“The holiness of God is not to be conceived of as one attribute among others. It is rather a general term representing the conception of God’s consummate perfection and total glory. It is His infinite moral perfection crowning His infinite intelligence and power.”

RL Dabney once said that holiness isn't a single attribute but instead it's a result of all God's perfection together. Every representation of God, every manifestation of God, every revelation of God indicates His perfection. When we think of God's holiness, we should think of his utter separation from sin because everything in the creation is affected and influenced by sin. God's holiness isn't an aspect of who He is or what He does, it is the essence of who He is. Every single thing He speaks, thinks, desires, and does is holy in every way. 

He is holy in forgiveness. 

He is holy in justice. 

He is holy in love, 

He is holy in mercy. 

He is holy in power. 

He is holy in sovereignty. 

He is holy in wisdom. 

He is holy in grace. 

He is holy in patience. 

He is holy in anger. 

He is holy in faithfulness. 

He is holy in compassion. 

He is holy. 

How can we become holy? Holiness only results from a relationship with God by believing in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and accepting His gift of eternal life. If we haven't placed our faith in God's Son alone to save us from sins, then our pursuit of holiness is futile. 

My prayer is that this month, as we read and write these verses about the holiness of God, that we are truly overwhelmed by His holiness and the gift of eternal life that He alone can give.

Devotional Books I Adore

I often get messages asking me what my favorite devotional books are so I thought I would 

share all of my favorites for anyone who is looking for one to use to start their day.  

(And if you don't start your day with a devotion or some time just reading God's word, I highly recommend it. 

Focusing on the WORD before the WORLD makes a huge difference in my day 

and keeps me grounded and focused on what is truly important!)

I get to work super early and the first thing I do is my bible reading/scripture 

writing and then read a morning devotion or two. 

While some people use the same devotional book all year long, I am not that girl. 

Instead I rotate and alternate through several different devotional books

 each year - some year long devotionals and some topical. 

I also have most of these books in a physical copy AND a Kindle copy. 

Why? Because when I travel I don't want to carry them all around. 

(Hey...Did you know that once you buy a physical copy, 

you can purchase a Kindle copy super inexpensively? You can!)

Below are my current favorites including a link to each one and a little info about it: 

New Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp

This book includes 365 useful, practical, encouraging and convicting devotions.

Paul is an honest, straightforward writer who constantly reminds us in these devotions 

that Jesus came to save us from ourselves and that we desperately need Him. 

5 Word Prayers by Lisa Whittle

This book includes 40 five word prayers to pray when you aren't sure what to pray. 

My copy is well used and so greatly loved!

It includes prayers like.....

"I need you desperately today" and "Please give me strength now".

Lisa is so authentic and genuine and I adore her writing so!

And if you aren't listening to her daily podcast, Jesus Over Everything, 

 YOU SHOULD BE!

Lysa's writing is real and honest and full of fabulous, relate-able stories. 

Everyday Holy by Melanie Shankle

This book includes 100 devotions to remind us where God is in this mess 

of our lives and how He is always working for each of us.

Melanie is so genuine and I love her sense of humor. 

Reading this book makes me feel like I am sitting down and chatting with a girlfriend. 

One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp

This book includes 60 devotions all focused on finding grace in our everyday lives. 

Ann's writing style is beautiful and truly helps open the readers eyes to the blessings God has given us all around each day in the little and the big things- in the good times and the bad times. 

Always Enough/Never Too Much by Jess Connollly and Hayley Morgan

This book includes 100 devotions that focus on targeting and banishing lies and insecurities 

and focuses on reminding us of our identity in Christ. 

This topical devotion book is packed of godly wisdom and one I use as someone who often feels like I can be too much and not enough- sometimes on the same day.

Memory Verses 2018: Week 1

I don't know about you but every day I see or read or hear something that makes 

my heart break and makes me honestly shake my head at the world we live in. 

There is just so much heartbreak and sadness and evil and pain that 

honestly it's heartbreaking and almost completely overwhelming. 

When I start to feel overwhelmed with the awfulness of this world, 

I turn to God's word because it's honestly the ONLY thing that gives me any true comfort.

God’s word anchors us to Him and is what directs us to fulfill our purpose in life.  

It is God Himself that gives His Word power, and it is in and through 

His Word that we encounter Him.  

When we read and meditate on God’s Word, 

we build our relationship with him stronger and deeper and we have HOPE. 

Hope that is ONLY found in Him.

This is mentioned over and over again in scripture. 

Here are just a few examples: 

Deuteronomy 6:4-9:  

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 119:15-18 

I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word. Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

John 1: 1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

He wants us to know Him, focus our hearts, souls and all our might on loving Him.

  

He wants to use His Word to:

•Encourage us

•Affirm us

•Love us

•Be our stronghold and anchor

In order for that to happen we must: Hear it, Read it, Learn it, and Obey it!

I read recently of a woman who said…...

"If I bring my phone to Bible study what I’m saying is I’m NOT okay missing a phone or text from a friend or work- but I AM okay missing the message the Lord might have for me.” 

OUCH. That stepped ALL over my toes!

I believe that Satan doesn’t want us in God’s word and will use any and every means possible to keep us from the truth and therefore we must be prepared and have a PLAN!

To work on hiding God's word in our hearts, 

this year I'm going to be posting a memory verse for each week. 

My sweet friend Mandy compiled this great list and each week I'll be sharing 

a new verse along with a printable for you to print out and hang up.

Worry Slanders Every Promise of God

I've spent most of my life a worrier. 

I worry about everything.

No seriously, EVERYTHING. 

My husband, my daughter, my dad, my sister, my family,

my inlaws, my cousins, that people won't like me, 

 the health of my family, my friends, my job, finances,

 my dogs, my marriage, my friendships, 

my health, accidents, death, 

spiders, pickles getting on my food, ants.

You name it, I worry about it. 

And I hate it. 

Because I KNOW that God tell me so many times not to worry....

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, 

with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, 

will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6:34 

 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. 

Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Colossians 3:15 

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,

 to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

As I prepare to send Madison off to college in a few months, 

my worry tendencies seem to be OUT of control. 

I'm spending lots of time reminding myself of God's promises. 

This quote sums up what I know to be true about worry 

and is one of my all time favorites.

NOT TODAY SATAN

I have a confession to make. 

At least once a month I think 

(and sometimes say out loud)

"I'm quitting writing scripture writing plans. NO MORE. I am DONE."

Now as I write that I realize it sounds ridiculous. 

But let me explain. 

I get tons of emails each month from some sweet readers of my blog 

and followers of the scripture writing plans and I LOVE those emails. 

Seriously you can't imagine how much those sweet emails mean to me! 

They are full of stories of how the scripture writing plans have 

touched them, caused their relationship with Christ to grow, 

and how they are using them with friends, family members & those in their church. 

I can't begin to tell you how much I love those emails, am thankful for those sweet people 

who take time out of their busy schedule to write me & how much joy they bring to my heart. 

I love hearing how God is using my tiny works for His good 

and He is so very gracious to show me through those emails. 

However in addition to those precious emails....

I also get a handful of emails that I do NOT love. 

The kind that upset me and make me utter the statement above about quitting. 

Those emails are ones that complain & do so not very kindly.

Complain about the topic I chose for the month. 

Complain about the fact that there isn't a general plan for the month. 

Complain about the fact that there isn't a short plan. 

Complain that the new plan for the month hasn't been posted yet.

Complain about how the plans print on their printer. 

Just complain. 

And those emails make me sad. 

And sometimes I'll admit, angry. 

Angry because I do the plans in my spare time- of which I do not have much- and for FREE. 

(Fun fact: I don't make a single penny off of my blog and in fact running my blog COSTS me money
No sponsorship. No ads. Nada.) 

Like many of you, I have a super busy full time job, 

lots of volunteer opportunities I'm involved in, 

a family to love and take care of, a Bible study to teach, a blog to write 

and a million other tasks to accomplish each day. 

Writing a plan takes time and isn't something that I do quickly or take lightly. 

It takes time in the word to research and read. 

It takes time to create it, have it proofed, have it translated, format it, post it, etc. 

And I love doing it but when I get those emails it honestly makes me want to cry. 

And sometimes it does. 

As I was thinking of the latest not kind email I received late last night I realized something- 

those emails are having the EXACT effect that Satan would like for them to. 

He is CHEERING when they upset me and make me think of quitting. 

Because he would LOVE to cause me to quit writing those plans. 

Because he hates anything that would cause us to grow closer to the Lord. 

And that made me wish I was wearing this shirt of mine that I love: 

Because stupid, stinky Satan will not win. 

I will NOT quit doing something that I know God has called me to do. 

NOT TODAY SATAN. 

Galatians 6:9-10 says....

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Such a sweet reminder that when we are weary 

(and that's when Satan loves to attack us) 

we are to carry on doing good. 

So my prayer for you and for me this morning is that when folks 

around us are used by Satan to make us angry

 and want to quit doing those things God has called us to do- 

that we see that clearly and say loudly: 

NOT TODAY SATAN! 

PS If you have to write someone an email to complain, please try to at least say something kind in it too!

But know that you have blessed me greatly with them!  

November Scripture Writing Plan: Comparison & Envy

Happy almost November friends!

The scripture writing plan this month is over a topic I think most of us struggle with:
COMPARISON & ENVY.

I don't know about you but I am a girl who tends to compare.

I unconsciously tend to compare just about everything-

families, houses, churches, jobs, relationships, husbands, hair, weight, children, friendships, 

finances, blessings and even sometimes burdens (how ridiculous is that?). 

I think so many of us look at what we have and compare to what we think others have 

(or what they appear to have) and find ourselves lacking. 

And comparison sweet friends is a tool of Satan and it is super dangerous!

Why? It's dangerous because it causes us to focus on ourselves, 

instead of on God and it usually leads to envy and jealousy and resentment (super UGH). 

Because we are so clearly aware of where WE fall short it's easy to listen to 

Satan when he points out those around us who do NOT have those 

shortcomings or who have more than we do. 

And oh how he loves to point out those things to us to get us to focus on them!

"Psst.....look at her- she is thin and beautiful and so put together. So not like you. You are a big, fat, old mess." 

"Psst.....look at her and her husband- they are so loving and treat each other so well. So not like you and your husband who are so often snarky and often ignore each other." 

"Psst.....look at her house. It's huge and gorgeous and perfectly decorated and there isn't a mess or dog hair in sight. So not like your messy, disorganized house!"

"Psst......look at their friendship. They are always doing so many fun things together and you are all alone. No one cares about you. 

We have to intentionally stop comparing and remember that

God has a special plan for each and every one of us. 

He has a plan created specifically for YOU. 

His gifts for you are the best gifts for YOU to posses. 

He created YOU in His image and knit you together in your mothers womb. 

He knows your inadequacies and insecurities. 

He knows what caused them and yet

He chose you before you were born for a specific purpose,

to fulfill a plan in a predetermined point in time.

Ephesians 2:10: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works,which God prepared in advance for us to do.

He created you, YOU. 

Instead of worrying about what others have and where we fall short, 
let's spend this month digging into His word

 to learn more about what God says about comparison and envy 
and then focus to STOP comparing ourselves to others!

June Scripture Writing Plan: God is SOVEREIGN

Happy almost June friends!

The scripture writing plan this month is over the wonderful fact that GOD IS SOVEREIGN!

God is sovereign. 

Sovereign is defined as:

1. a monarch; a king, queen, or other supreme ruler.
2. a person who has supreme power or authority.
3. a group or body of persons or a state having sovereign authority.

There is no limit to God's rule. He is the boss. 

He is sovereign over the whole universe & absolutely everyone & everything in it. 

He is never frustrated, helpless, or lost. 

He is the ultimate source of all power, authority, and everything that exists. 

He is without equal. 

He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. 

He is not limited in any way at all. 

He has no beginning and no end. 

He is in control. 

His sovereignty means that there isn't anything that will ever enter your life that God does not either cause or allow. And NOTHING will ever enter your life that, if you are willing to trust in Him, He cannot work our for your good. 

He is more powerful and more loving than we can ever imagine. 

Let's spend this month focusing on the fact that God is sovereign.
