For the past month or two I had seen lots of ruffled Christmas skirts on Pinterest that I loved.
{I big puffy heart ruffles of all kinds!}
So when my sweet cousin Amy and I planned a craft day for the Sat. after Thanksgiving,
it was the first thing on our list of crafts to make.
After spending quite some time figuring the best way to make ruffles on a sewing machine
{tightest tension, longest stitch length}
and fighting with Amy's sewing machine bobbin-
we had finished our two ruffled skirts and they were super cute!
And truthfully, super easy!
For those interested in making your own, here's how:
Supplies:
- Canvas drop cloth or piece of canvas fabric {large enough to have a 4 ft x 4 ft square}
- 3 yards of fabric {I used muslin but cotton or linen would also work}
- sewing machine and thread
- glue gun and glue sticks {lots of glue sticks}
- scissors
1. Lay out your piece of canvas. We used a tree skirt of Amy's as a pattern, traced it, and cut it out. If you don't have one to use as a pattern start by making sure your fabric is a square, fold it into quarters and then into a triangle. Then cut a piece off the end in a semi-circle.
2. Take and cut off the tip in a semi-circle for the center of the tree skirt. Choose one of the sides to cut up so that you have an opening in the skirt.
3. Take your fabric and cut it into 3 inch strips. I used a rotary cutter and mat which made it go much faster. If you don't have one- I totally suggest you add it to your Christmas list!
4. Get your sewing machine out. I filled three bobbins so that when I needed them I could easily and quickly change them. Set the tension to the highest and the stitch length on your machine to the longest. Stitch about 1/2 inch from one side. As you sew....voila! You have ruffles. Continue stitching until you have a pile o' ruffles!!!
5. Starting at the outside edge of the canvas circle, hot glue the ruffles onto the canvas. Once you finish one layer, start a new one that slightly overlaps the previous one- covering the stitching.
At the end of each row, I went over the edge of the slit a bit,
so that it was more finished on the edges of the opening.
My sweet friend Dory loved the ruffled skirt
{she loves ruffles as much as I do}
so I decided to make one for her.
Since I was going to purchase the supplies to make one,
I decided to buy enough and made a second one to give away!
So if you'd like a chance to win your very own ruffled tree skirt,

my favorite thing about Christmas is the slowing down of schedules... more family time... and getting to do the things we WANT to do, no HAVE to do. Christmas Eve service is pretty great, too.
ReplyDeleteSeeing the look on people's face when they open the gift I picked especially for them. Joy-pure JOY!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is being able to celebrate it. As you know, I grew up a Jehovah's Witness and never got to celebrate it. So now that I have kids of my own I make sure that it is a special time of year for them.
ReplyDeleteThat people are more likely to give to those that are in need this time of year. If only we could remember throughout the year.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is lighting up the tree and putting the star on the top of the tree!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite things about Christmas are the sounds and smells and sparkles. All the things you don't experience during the other eleven months make December wonderful: pine and peppermint and carols and lights... Oooh. So lovely!

Finding JOY in 6th Grade
I love having my girls home from school. I enjoy the unscheduled time with them to do whatever they wish. We can have candy canes and hot chocolate for breakfast, cuddle in bed together in the morning - no rushing to get ready for school.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is the joy. I often wonder why we wait to share the joy during one month only.
ReplyDeleteI love hanging ornaments on the christmas tree with my children! We talk about the memorable ones and how we came to have them! Very sweet!
ReplyDeleteCelebrating Christ's birthday, and since this is my first Christmas as a parent :) I look forward to carrying on traditions and creating new ones with my little family!

Getting coffee and driving around looking at everyone's Christmas decorations!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was about 8 years old, 40+ (big plus) years ago, I remember driving by a sign somewhere on Texas Ave. that said “Merry Xmas.” There weren’t even very many stores on Tx Ave back then, but time has faded my memory on what store it was. Anyway, I asked my sweet, sweet grandma, Nannie, why did they write it like that? She said so they could fit it on the sign, but you should never take Christ out of Christmas. I still remember that to this day, and miss her very much. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
ReplyDeleteI love spending time with my boys and handing down all the sweet traditions from my Mom. The Angel on top of our tree is the one I grew up with and it came off of a Christmas gift my Dad gave my Mom. My mom taught us a song to sing when we put her up, Sweet Angie the Christmas Tree Angel...putting her up is one of my most favorite things.

Love the fact that Christ came so I may live. Also love special time with family & friends outside of the normal routine.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is actually the days leading up to Christmas. I love being with my family, sitting in the living room enjoying the lights on the tree, all the baking and craft making, and the anticipation of Christmas morning. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is being with my whole family and spending quality time with all of them. It's awesome when everyone gets together during this special time!

My favorite thing about Christmas is the time spent with family and decorating the house to make it sparkle for the season!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is seeing the faces of my children as they wake up full of excitement. Last yr, one of mine slept for about 4 hrs and then woke up sure it was time. It makes it all worthwhile. Children are the truest blessing of all, and to think it all started with a baby in a manger.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas are our traditions, and the memories that come with carrying them out year after year. One of my new favorites is going to see Lights at our local zoo every year with my cousin and her family.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE seeing the kids get excited about every little thing!! Love your skirt - so pretty!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is spending extra time with my kids!!! I am SO excited about spending my whole vacaction week with them!!! I have been looking forward to it ALL YEAR!!! We plan our WHOLE YEAR around it!!! We are leaving on 12/28 to spend our vacation together skiing and visiting family! Yippee!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust stumbled on your blog while looking up Tree Skirt tutorials...and I'm in love! :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of Christmas is watching my kids faces when they see the tree & the lights. They are 10, 7 and 4 this year and they still are in awe when everything is lit up and decorated. My husband is in the military and has been deployed over Christmas a few times and probably will be again next year, so we try to soak up the small, simple things at Christmas and enjoy time together, since we're never guaranteed to all be in the same room from year to year.
For some reason it won't let me post with my Google account so here's my contact info :)

My favorite part of Christmas is seeing my kids light up when I pull out the Christmas decorations...especially the ones they made for me in preschool
ReplyDeleteI love your Christmas tree skirt - and it certainly doesn't look easy to me!!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite things about Christmas are the memories. When my dad was young he didn't have fun Christmases so when we were little he and my mom would go all out! Christmas Eve was always the same, friends and family for munchies and drinks, going on a ride to look for Santa, and then we would return home to find out we had just missed him and our presents were there!! After church, more people came over and we had soup, etc. Now my parents are both gone and I so appreciate everything they did to make it so special. Now it is my turn to try to create that for my family!

ReplyDeleteBeautiful Christmas tree skirt! You make it look easy, but I'm SURE it must have taken some dedicated time! My favorite thing about Christmas is all of the days leading up to Christmas and the fun activities that I can do with my 2nd graders. I'm lucky to work in a district where we are still allowed to celebrate the Holidays! Also, I love listening to the Christmas tunes both to and from work during the month of December!

What a beautiful Christmas tree skirt! My favorite part of Christmas is watching and listening to my husband read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to my son on Christmas Eve night.

My favorite thing about Christmas is the innocence and child like faith I get to see when we put up the manger scene. I tend to put it out and set all the figures where I think they "should" go, yet it never fails that one of my children will go take all the wise men and turn them directly around and facing baby Jesus. I am so thankful that in spite of the "magic" of Christmas that my children remind me through their actions what the season is all about. They each receive 3 gifts that represent the 3 gifts that the wise men brought Jesus, and they are happy about it. I am so thankful that God sent his son...for my salvation and that He reflects that through my children during this time of year.
ReplyDeleteI love the lights and sparkles!!

Giving - to family, friends and friends that I just haven't met yet. I love to see the joy in people's faces when they get something unexpected. And then I tell them, BLESSINGS! Give God the glory!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is tradition. We all get busy and forget to make a phone call or cancel a dinner date.. people we love and the simple joys of life tend to get pushed aside in day to day life. On Christmas, we stop. We take the time. We make the call. We go for that drive.
ReplyDeleteWe meet our loved ones and make up for lost time. It is not even always about the food or presents. Christmas is about remembering to love the way that God loves us. We needed love and He gave us that in His son.

Im not sure that I have one favorite thing about Christmas. I kind of think that all of it is pretty magical. All the lights, the smells, the sounds. Watching my babes read books and play legos in the Christmas tree light. I love how baking every day and eating cookies as an entire meal is totally acceptable during the holidays. Everyone just seems so happy and grateful this time of year. Its all pretty fantastic

Giving! I love gift giving, it makes me feel like it's an outer expression of my love. (also thank you for sharing your creations, I just found you today through pinterest! I'm the PTO president and am trying to find things that will be special for our teachers, I'm going to print your class rules and modpodge them on boards.) xoxo j

ReplyDeleteyour tree skirt is gorgeous!!!
Ooo, there are so many things to choose from, but I'd have to say two of my faves are eggnog and the Starbucks Charlie Brown Christmas CD. They work well together!
ReplyDeleteSpending time with family.
ReplyDeleteI have so many favorite things about Christmas but this year it has to be the reaction of my 2 year old twins to the wonderfulness of a Christmas Tree! Every morning, they rush in yelling "Tree, Tree!!' and just stand there and gaze at the twinkling lights. Every night they have to give it a hug and a kiss before they go to bed. It's magical!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite things about Christmas are the food and the gift giving. I'm pretty sure my love language is giving gifts and I love Christmas because I can give gifts to everybody just because I want to!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing on Christmas is seeing my kids wake up and discover that Santa really did leave them something under the tree after all. Heehee. That makes my whole year right there, seeing their faces light up. That's Christmas for me. Have a good one and you did a great job on the tree skirt. Very beautiful. :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is the music, and the cookies, and the lights....I'm not sure I can choose just one!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing is the togetherness. Picking out a tree, decorating a tree, shopping, baking cookies, pictures, decorating the house, listening to Christmas music, phone calls to distant family, mailing & receiving Christmas cards, etc. We don't get to spend as much quality time most of the year because of my.hubby's wirk and we live far from all family. So Christmas is the best time of the year for me.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is decorating and Christmas music!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things I love about Christmas it's hard to pick just one! Every year, we have a huge family Christmas party and I always look forward to seeing the entire family. Of course, I love the music, decorating, putting up the tree and all the yummy food. This year is extra special because our son is 15 mo. old and we are super excited to see his face when he sees all the wonderful things that "Santa" has brought him!! Jackson is our first child and my husband and I are really excited this year :)
ReplyDeleteI love love love this! My sister and I plan to make one for each of our trees.... if only my mom would let me have my Christmas present (a sewing machine) early so that I can get going! My favorite thing about Christmas is giving presents! I get so excited I can't keep gifts under the tree for wanting to let everyone open them early... especially my nephew!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite thing about Christmas is when all of us kids, our spouses and their children get together at my parents house and take turns telling what has happened in our lives over the past year and something that we are thankful for. We all live away from each other so its so nice to get caught up with each other and celebrate in the good things/ accomplishments that have happened in our lives this year. And to be thankful that we are all together again for another year. My 2nd favorite part is the Christmas music, and singing about Jesus' birth. Tis the reason for the season!!
ReplyDeleteLove Christmas, the music, the food, everything about it.
