Monday Morning Question of the Day

When I was a child, my sweet mother would paint
wooden Christmas ornaments
(cut out by my sweet Daddy) each year for
the classmates of both my sister and I.

My mother was a very talented painter and would sit
for hours on the couch painting something.
(In fact, in my mind- that's often the picture I have of her in my head.
Sitting on the couch painting or reading a book. With a glass of sweet tea beside her. )

I have friends who still to this day have some of those
Snoopy and Ziggy (obviously this was LONG ago) ornaments.

This was such a fun tradition and something
we looked forward to each year.

When Madison was born, my mom
decided to continue this tradtion with her.
The ornaments she painted for her and her friends are adorable
and are now my absolutely favorites.

As I hang them on the tree each year it
breaks my heart that there are only a few.
They truly are some of my greatest treasures-
because they were painted with such love.

So what is your favorite ornament on your tree
and is there a special reason why?

  1. My favorite ornament on my tree isn't an ornament at all. It is something similar to you. It is the memories in all the ornaments and how we came to have them.

But if I had to list just one, it is a cute, cartoonish ornament that says "Just Maui'ed!" on it. Mitch found it when we were on Maui for our honeymoon in 2000.

  2. Growing up my mom made all of our ornaments. She made angels, snow babies, gingerbread men, icecicles, and the list goes on. Last year when I opened the precious box I keep them in, I noticed one of them had broken. It is a horrible feeling!

Other than all the pretty homemade ornaments, there is another special one on the tree. After Daddy passed away, I was in the Hallmark store. They were starting to put out their ornaments. I saw an Eeyor ornament. Eeyor was a family nickname for Daddy. Of course I had to get it. So much of my Christmas tree has my mother's handy work, it is nice to see the little Eeyor to remind me of Daddy and smile.

  3. my all-time favorite ornament is the silver bells that were my great grandparents from their tree. LOVE them.

  4. I love your handpainted ornaments from your mom.... what a blessing to have them!

  5. I still have all of the ones your mom painted for me. It wouldn't be a "real" Christmas without those on the tree. I also have our girl scout ornament from Troop 2211!

  6. I love any ornament that my son made for me in school. Those are definitely my favorites.

  7. One year my mom, my two sisters and me sat around and made ornaments. We had a great time.

Sadly, my mom has them all and I don't get home to see her at Chrismas time very often anymore. This year I will be home the weekend before Christmas, I might just snag a couple of those ornaments we all made so very long ago.

Thanks for reminding me of a cherished memory.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  8. Forgot to answer your question ... a tradition my daughter and I started last year is to go to the local pottery shop and each paint an ornament. I then paint our names and the year on the back. This year's should be ready for pickup - I can't wait to see how they turned out!! I think it will be really neat to see how her art progresses, since she was 2 1/2 last year when we started.
